Modern Treatments for Hair Loss

Hair loss can be a distressing and frustrating experience, and it is a problem that affects millions of people worldwide. While there are many possible causes of hair loss, such as genetics, hormones, and medical conditions, there are also various treatment options available, including medications. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the medication options for hair loss.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a topical medication that is commonly used to treat hair loss. It is available over-the-counter and is applied directly to the scalp. Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels in the scalp, which increases blood flow to the hair follicles and can stimulate hair growth. While it can be effective in promoting hair growth, it may take several months of consistent use to see results, and hair loss may resume if the medication is discontinued. Minoxidil works best on the vertex (back part) of the scalp where hair loss is common. It works less well at the temples, for example. Oral minoxidil is also an option in small doses in those for whom topical minoxidil has not been successful.

Finasteride

Finasteride (and its relative dutasteride) is an oral medication that is available by prescription only. It works by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can contribute to hair loss. Finasteride has been shown to be effective in slowing or stopping hair loss in men, but it may take up to six months of consistent use to see results. It is not recommended for use in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as it can cause birth defects.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

PRP therapy is a relatively new treatment option for hair loss that involves injecting a patient’s own platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. Platelets contain growth factors that can promote hair growth and healing. While the evidence for the effectiveness of PRP therapy in promoting hair growth is limited, some studies have shown promising results.

For most men with standard, male-pattern baldness, a combination of oral finasteride and topical minoxidil is a potent combination to slow hair loss and possibly regain some hair.
